Senior Geologist/Engineering Geologist

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Geologist and /or Engineering Geologist who is highly experienced in conducting geological investigations, slope stability analysis, analysing rock formations, and assessing subsurface conditions to support various engineering and geotechnical projects. The role requires providing geological expertise, interpreting data, and offering recommendations for the planning and execution of projects. The Senior Geologist/Engineering Geologist leads project teams, collaborates with other specialists, and ensures that geological factors are considered to mitigate risks and optimise project outcomes.

Duties and responsibilities are:

Analysis and Groundworks

  • Analyse a range of geotechnical problems, e.g. shallow and deep foundations, cut-and-cover tunnel structures, embankments, highway pavements, dams, retaining structures, slope stability, soil improvement, and seismic designs, and prepare geotechnical reports.
  • Demonstrate expertise in designing effective and sustainable slope remediation solutions, including soil nailing, rock bolting, and subsoil drainage designs, to mitigate slope instability risks.
  • Utilize slope stability analysis software such as Slope/W, RockFall and DIPS to perform in-depth analyses and simulations, aiding in accurate risk assessment and remediation planning.
  • Utilize your strong background in GIS to integrate geospatial data, analyse slope characteristics, and create detailed slope hazard maps to support decision-making processes.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in slope risk assessment methodologies, geotechnical engineering practices, and industry trends to continually improve and enhance project outcomes.
Project Management
  • Strong commitment to health and safety, and ensure that the company’s occupational health and safety and environmental procedures are applied to each project.
  • Plan, resource and control projects effectively and safely to ensure work is completed in accordance with company policies and procedures, on time and within budget.
  • Ensure geotechnical/geological site investigations are undertaken to ascertain general surface and subsurface conditions including site inspections; in-situ testing; supervision of drilling and investigation works; and organising requisite laboratory testing.
  • Identify potential problems and obstacles of the project and develop a contingency plan.
  • Monitor and review projects and ensure action is taken if deliverables or deadlines are not being achieved.
  • Issue invoices with reports or monthly for ongoing projects. Invoices should be monitored for payment and outstanding invoices followed up with the client.
Business Development
  • Maintain strong relationships with existing clients and develop new clients from existing contacts, referrals or opportunities.
  • Seek new business opportunities. These may be from enquiries to DP or through tender opportunities, and submit proposals and tenders
  • Contribute to R&D projects to develop expertise within existing or new fields. Budgets can be assigned by the DP Board.
Team management
  • Manage project team members clarifying, communicating, gaining commitment and assigning tasks with clear priorities to team members.
  • Provide mentorship to more junior engineers.
  • Proposal and Report Writing
  • Write and send project proposals and reports to the client on or before the due date.
Risk Management
  • Contract analysis and risk identification by reviewing contracts and agreement relating to the geological and geotechnical aspect of the project and identifying potential liabilities in the contract.
  • Collaborate with legal and rest of the project management teams to negotiate favourable terms in contracts and ensure alignment with company policies and guidelines.

About You

To be considered for this role, the successful applicant will have:

  • Degree in Geology or Geotechnical Engineering
  • Post graduate qualifications degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field. Additional trainings and certifications in geotechnical and geological disciplines are advantageous.
  • Local experience and knowledge will be highly regarded
  • Accredited Slope Risk Assessor: Possess a valid accreditation as a Slope Risk Assessor with TfNSW.
  • Demonstrated a minimum of 10 years of experience in slope risk assessment, hazard mapping, and slope remediation design within the engineering or geotechnical consulting industry.
  • Thorough knowledge of geotechnical regulations, standards, and industry best practices, particularly related to slope risk assessment and remediation.
  • Experience working in the field undertaking Geotechnical investigations. This is to demonstrate a thorough knowledge to allow informed direction of junior staff and team members
  • Experience undertaking typical field work activities and laboratory testing
  • Experience with preparing tenders and detailed engineering reports
  • Experience with project financial management
  • A team player with a high level of initiative, flexibility and enthusiasm, and the ability to communicate well with clients.
  • Current Driver’s licence
  • High level of technical ability
  • Excellent oral communication skills
  • Excellent written communication skills including technical report writing
  • Knowledge of OHS compliance and Risk Management requirements
  • Knowledge of Environmental compliance requirements
  • Proven team management skills
  • Proven analysis problem solving skills
  • Ability to apply occupational health and safety and environmental policies, practices and procedures to geotechnical field work and construction work.
  • Drive and commitment towards managing projects.
  • Strong work ethic, consistent and reliable in attitude to work.
  • High level of computer skills with proficiency in specialised modelling programs
  • Ability to travel.
